Nagasaki viewpoints - Glover Hill and Nabekanmuri-yama
Glover Hill, or more precisely Glover Garden, is one of the main tourist attractions in Nagasaki, but then a little further up is Nabekanmuri-yama (Mount Nabekanmuri) with an observation deck. You can approach Glover Hill different ways. Most people do it from the port area, enter the hillside garden (admission ¥620) and take the escalator to the upper level, then walk down. Another way is by the so called "Glover Sky Road", located near the final stop of tram 5 in Ishibashi, not far from the Chinese Confucius Shrine and the Higashi-yamate Western-style Houses. This "sky road" is basically a funicular, mainly used by local residents. From the top of the funicular, you can walk to Ōura Cathedral and the lower entrance of Glover Garden, or take a lift to even further up to the upper entrance of Glover Garden. From here, the peak of Nabekanmuri-yama and the observation deck is a short uphill walk. Returning from Nabekanmuri-yama, it's worth entering the garden, it's quite nice. You find several western-style buildings in it, once home to some of the Nagasaki's foreign upper class. Near the lower end of the garden is Ōura Cathedral and other western buildings. As you walk down from here to the port, you get to the former Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank building and the former Nagasaki Customs Sagarimatsu Office, both housing museums today.
