Contemporary architecture and street art in Weiwuying, southeast of Kaohsiung’s downtown
The Weiwuying area in Kaohsiung is home to one of the city's most striking contemporary architectural landmarks—the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying). Situated within the expansive Weiwuying Metropolitan Park, this world-class arts venue is renowned for its fluid, wave-like design. It houses multiple performance spaces, including a concert hall, opera house, and recital hall, making it one of the largest arts centers in the world. The surrounding park provides a green escape in the city, offering walking trails and open-air spaces.
Just across the road lies another creative hub—the Weiwuying Street Art Village, also known as WeiWu Mi Mi Village. Once an ordinary residential area, it was transformed into a vibrant outdoor gallery through the efforts of the WAllRIORS street art collective. The transformation began with the Kaohsiung Lingya International Street Art Festival in 2016, where artists from Taiwan and around the world adorned the neighborhood's buildings with colorful and thought-provoking murals. Today, the area is a must-visit spot for art lovers and photographers, with its diverse mix of large-scale street art adding a dynamic contrast to the modern elegance of the arts center nearby. Together, these two cultural landmarks—one celebrating performing arts and the other urban street art—showcase Kaohsiung’s evolving creative scene and its commitment to fostering artistic expression in all forms.
