South of the River - Around Gangnam

Gangnam means "south of the river," referring to the Han River, which divides Seoul in two. However, it is just one of several districts in the area. Korea's tallest building, Lotte World Tower, is located in Jamsil, Songpa-gu (Songpa District), a neighboring district. Another notable landmark is Some Sevit, a floating island complex in Seocho-gu, another adjacent district. That said, Gangnam remains by far the liveliest, most upscale, and most diverse area "south of the river". It is also a vast district, consisting of multiple hubs, each offering unique attractions. Below is an overview of these key locations and sights.

The Jamsil neighborhood in Songpa-gu is a shopping area with the Lotte World Tower dominating the view.

Separated from Songpa-gu by the Tancheon Stream, the Samseong-dong neighborhood in eastern Gangnam is a lively business and entertainment hub with the COEX complex, the Starfield Library, the Gangnam Style Sculpture, and the Bongeunsa Temple.

The area around Gangnam Station is called Gangnam-daero, and it is one of Seoul’s busiest and most vibrant districts, famous for shopping, nightlife, business, and K-pop culture.

Located in the Sinsa-dong neighborhood, Garosu-gil is a famous street known for its trendy fashion, cafes, and artsy atmosphere.

Located in the Apgujeong-dong neighborhood, the Apgujeong Rodeo Area is a luxury shopping and entertainment hub famous for high-end fashion, beauty clinics, and K-pop culture.

Starting in Apgujeong-dong but extending into Cheongdam-dong, the K-Star Road features life-sized bear statues - known as GangnamDol - representing famous K-pop groups.

The Banpo-dong neighborhood in Seocho-gu (Seocho District) features the Banpo Hangang Park and Banpo Bridge Rainbow Fountain, both of which are pretty dull in winter, and the artificial island compley known as Some Sevit.
