Chan Chan and Huaca del Dragón (Huaca Arco Iris)
Built by the Chimú people, Chan Chan was the largest city of the pre-Columbian era in South America. It is located between Trujillo and Huanchaco and it is easy to reach it by public bus. Most of the site is still being excavated, and you can only visit a small portion of the adobe city. The ticket also enables you to visit the nearby museum but its collection is not too impressive. With the same ticket you can visit 2 more smaller sites in Trujillo itself. I took a taxi to one of them, Huaca del Dragón (also known as Huaca Arco Iris), but it was closed. However, the caretaker, for a bit of a tip, let me in. The area is not the best according to the taxi driver, but the site is on a main road and it is easy to catch a bus back to the centre.
