Argan trees and the tree-climbing goats

Image
Originally posted on December 16, 2017 Photos didn't come up too good as it's overcast and raining in el-Sawira (Essaouira), nevertheless we were happy to see the unique tree-climbing goats of Morocco. From the fruit of the Argan trees, endemic to a small area of Morocco and Algeria, women make oil, soap and cosmetics, using the stone grinder known as 'rhaa'.

Imlil, High Atlas

Aït Ben Haddou

Photos originally posted on December 10, 2017 Aït Ben Haddou, on the other side of the Atlas mountains if you are coming from Marrakesh, is a stunning place. The multi-story adobe buildings are architectural marvels, and there are so many of them. Unfortunately many are in a bad shape, but the main site is nicely kept. There is a cemetery behind it where, I guessed so and it was confirmed, people used to gather to make sacrifices and ask favours from God. The prectice is deemed sinful my hardline Islamists, nevertheless it is practiced all across North Africa and the Middle East. In this case a very interesting thing was pointed out by a local: one part of the cemetery is Muslim, the other is Jewish.
