Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge and Grand Canyon

If you’re looking for a different experience and landscape than the Avatar-style mountains of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, consider visiting the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and its famous Glass Bridge. These sites are not as grandoise or scary as the names suggest, but it’s still a nice program that takes about a long half-day or a short full day. The bridge isn’t too intimidating, as it includes solid metal sections alongside the glass panels. The canyon itself isn’t that grand in scale, but it’s definitely scenic. For an extra thrill, you can add a zip line ride across the canyon for just CNY 50, which is very reasonable. Now, looking back, I know I should have done it. A short boat ride at the end of the trail is included in the basic ticket.

Trip Info: From Wulingyuan Bus Station, there are frequent buses to the main entrance of the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Scenic Area. Here, at the ticket office, you can choose from various ticket combinations. (My hotel staff booked the basic Grand Canyon and Glass Skywalk ticket online in advance at the discounted rate of CNY 175.) From here, a shuttle bus, included in the ticket, takes you to the bridge which is a few kilometers away. After crossing the bridge, there’s supposed to be a direct path down into the canyon, but it appeared to be closed during my visit. An upper path leads to the zip line station and an elevator that takes you further down. There are also a couple of other elevators and slides, which require separate tickets. At the bottom of the canyon, there’s a small lake, or more like a pond. From there, the trail follows the canyon floor until another small lake, where a boat ride takes you back to the main entrance area.
