Guilin peaks and viewpoints
Located near Yangshuo, Guilin also boasts many dramatic karst hills that rise abruptly from the landscape. Among the most famous are Diecai Hill, Fubo Hill, and Elephant Trunk Hill, all situated along the Li River. Another prominent landmark in the center of Guilin is the Solitary Beauty Peak, a striking stand-alone limestone rock with a pavilion at its summit. The peak is located within the grounds of the Prince’s City (Prince Jingjiang Mansion), which served as a royal palace during the Ming Dynasty and is now a museum open to visitors. Map of central Guilin
I skipped the Solitary Beauty Peak in the Prince’s City and visited the other three hills over two consecutive days, though they could be covered in a single full day. Diecai Hill is the most extensive, made up of several connected peaks, while Elephant Trunk Hill is the most famous and iconic.
Diecai Hill
The two main peaks are Bright Moon Peak and Cane Peak, both offering pavilions and panoramic views over the city and the Li River. Beneath Bright Moon Peak lies Wind Cave, known for its rock formations and historical carvings, while beneath Cane Peak is a large arched opening that cuts through the hill, revealing views to the other side. I also climbed Yuyue Hill, located between the eastern and southern entrances, but it doesn't offer much view.
Fubo Hill
Rising sharply beside the Li River, this limestone hill is known for its riverside caves filled with ancient Buddhist carvings and inscriptions, as well as a climb to a viewing platform with sweeping vistas.
Elephant Hill
Guilin’s most famous landmark, named for its resemblance to an elephant drinking from the Li River. It features a natural arch, Moon Cave, and is especially picturesque at sunrise or sunset.
