Stopover in Chiayi - A nice small city, perfect to relax for a day or two

Chiayi is a pleasant small city, perfect for unwinding after a hike in the Alishan mountains. I found a slightly old-fashioned but nice budget hotel near the railway station, which was ideal for a couple of nights. The city has a few interesting attractions. Song of the Forest is a wooden art installation celebrating Chiayi’s deep connection to nature and forestry. The Alishan Forest Railway Garage Park showcases historic locomotives once used to transport logs from the mountains. Hinoki Village, a restored Japanese-era settlement, offers a nostalgic glimpse of traditional wooden houses and local crafts. Chiayi Old Prison provides insight into Taiwan’s past, while the Chiayi Cultural & Creative Industries Park and Chiayi Art Museum highlight the city's evolving arts scene. And, of course, like every city in Taiwan, Chiayi also has its day and night markets, offering a lively atmosphere and a chance to sample local specialties.
