Anping - Tainan’s historic seaside district, linked by a canal

Tainan’s Anping District is a historic and culturally rich area where the Tainan Canal and the Yanshui River meet the Taiwan Strait, creating a unique coastal landscape with mangroves and wetlands. As the birthplace of Taiwan’s colonial history, Anping is home to Fort Zeelandia, a 17th-century fortress built by the Dutch, which stands as a reminder of the island’s early foreign influences. The district is also known for its old streets, where visitors can explore traditional shops, street food, and historical buildings. Numerous temples dot the area, reflecting its deep spiritual heritage and the blend of Taoist, Buddhist, and folk beliefs. Once a thriving port that played a crucial role in Taiwan’s maritime trade, Anping Port today caters to small-scale fishing and tourist activities.
