Taipei's East District and Xinyi District - Few attractions, lots of shopping
Apart from a few attractions, most notably the National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall and the Taipei 101 skyscraper, there isn’t much to see in Taipei's East District (Dongqu) and Xinyi District. On the other hand, the area is packed with shopping malls, high-end boutiques, trendy restaurants, and cafés. If that’s your thing, check out these posts: East District of Daan and Xinyi Shopping District. Personally, I’m not interested in this kind of stuff, but I’m always up for a walk and wanted to get a feel for this part of Taipei as well. I started my walk at Zhongxiao Fuxing Station and passed through parts of Daan, Songshan, and Xinyi districts. The National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall is quite grand, but unfortunately it was closed. The Taipei 101 tower, once the tallest building in the world and still the tallest in Taiwan, is also impressive, but the observation deck is quite expensive. It was cloudy anyway, so skipping it was an easy decision—maybe another time when visibility is better. I ended the walk at Linjiang Night Market (also known as Tonghua Night Market), but since it was still early, it wasn’t too exciting. Still, for a day with less-than-ideal weather, it turned out to be a pleasant walk.
