Attractions in Datong District, one of Taipei's oldest neighborhoods

Datong District is one of Taipei’s most historically rich areas, where the city’s commercial, religious, and cultural heritage is preserved amid modern urban life. At its heart is Dihua Street, Taipei’s oldest commercial street, known for its well-preserved Qing Dynasty and Japanese-era architecture. The street remains a bustling center for traditional Chinese medicine, dried goods, tea, and fabric stores, especially lively during the Lunar New Year celebrations. One of the most important historical temples in Taipei, the Xiahai City God Temple (Guardian of the City), is also on Dihua Street.

The district’s connection to trade and the Tamsui River is evident at Dadaocheng Wharf, once a key port for tea exports and now a scenic riverside destination with cycling paths, sunset views, and cultural events. Not far from the waterfront is Dadaocheng Cisheng Temple, a temple dedicated to Mazu, the sea goddess, with a vibrant night market in front, serving some of Taipei’s best street food. Another notable religious site is FaChuKung Temple, a historic temple with strong local spiritual significance. Dadaocheng Presbyterian Church, established in the late 19th century, reflects the influence of Western missionaries in Taiwan’s history.

Beyond Dadaocheng, Datong District is also home to Taipei’s most important Confucian and Taoist temples. The Taipei Confucius Temple, modeled after the original Confucius Temple in Shandong, celebrates Confucian philosophy and traditional education. Nearby, the Dalongdong Baoan Temple, a UNESCO-recognized site, is an architectural masterpiece and a center of Taoist worship, particularly devoted to Baosheng Dadi, the god of medicine. To experience Datong’s lively modern side, Ningxia Night Market is a must-visit, famous for its traditional Taiwanese dishes and snacks.

A blend of history, culture, and cuisine, Datong District offers a journey through Taipei’s past while remaining a dynamic part of its present. Whether exploring old streets, visiting historic temples, or enjoying a meal at the night market, this district captures the essence of Taipei’s heritage.
