Jung-gu district - Busan's old port and historic center
The old port and historic center of Busan, buzzing Jung-gu district, offers a vibrant mix of shopping, dining, and cultural experiences.
Key attractions include Jagalchi Market, Korea’s largest seafood market, and the surrounding fish market, bustling with stalls and seafood eateries offering freshly caught delights. The nearby port area, with its iconic Yeongdodaegyo Bridge, provides scenic views of the waterfront and the city.
At the heart of the district is BIFF Square, named after the renowned Busan International Film Festival. This pedestrian-friendly area is a hub of activity, featuring first-run movie theaters, handprint plaques of famous actors, and a variety of street food vendors.
Close by, Gukje Market presents a colorful maze of stalls selling everything from handcrafted goods and Korean herbs to trendy clothing and street snacks, making it a must-visit for shoppers and foodies alike.
For panoramic views of the city, head to the sleek Busan Tower, which offers a 360-degree vista from its observation deck. (It was quite hazy at the time of my visit, so I actually skipped it.) Cultural enthusiasts can explore the nearby Busan Film Museum, which highlights the city’s cinematic significance.
Lastly, don’t miss the 40 Steps Cultural and Tourism Theme Street, an area steeped in nostalgia that celebrates the life and history of Busan during the Korean War era, complete with statues, murals, and interactive exhibits that bring its rich history to life.
