Day trip from Shanghai - Zhujiajiao water town

Around 50 kilometres from central Shanghai is the town of Zhujiajiao, famous for its old town crisscrossed with canals lined with beautiful old buildings. You can reach it by ordinary metro for the very reasonable price of 8 yuans, changing at Shanghai-Hongqiao Railway Station. Along the way you see clusters of high-rise residential buildings among the agricultural fields, some already occupied, some still in the making. Zhujiajiao also has a modern centre (that's where I headed first as I needed a bank), but even there you spot cute old buildings. Then the actual old town is really stunning. Touristy, yes, but very beautiful.
