Hampi hike - Sunset views from Matanga Hill

Matanga Hill offers the best view of Hampi and its surroundings, but it is a moderate hike with steep climbs and sometimes not the best path. Towards the end you have to walk next to big drops, so that part is not for everyone. If you manage to reach the temple on the top, you will have a stunning 360° view of the whole area around Hampi.

The hike starts at the Virupaksha Temple in the centre of Hampi, in a straight line along the ancient boulevard towards the monolithic bull.

The path to Matanga Hill is to the south at this point.

The steps carved into the rock lead next to a deep drop, but there is a safer path behind it.

For many people this area with the big flat boulders is the final point in the hike, this is a popular sunset viewpoint.

From here the hike gets a bit scarier as it leads next to big drops.

The final stretch to the temple, and views from the top.

You could make a little detour on the way back, through an ashram.

If you have time, you could explore the temples when you get to the main road.
