Chilling in McLeodganj, Dharamshala

Located 2,000 metres above sea level, McLeodganj is an area of Dharamshala on a hilltop high above Dharamshala city centre, which lies at the elevation of around 1,500 metres. As you approach Dharamshala, you can see McLeodganj and other hilltop settlements, with dramatic, snow-capped high mountain ranges in the background. McLeodganj is where most places of interest are located, as it is home to most Tibetan temples and institutions, and most tourist facilities are also located here. Smaller villages such as Dharamkot and Bhagsu provide quieter alternatives near McLeodganj, ideal especially for longer stays. There is also a Christian church nearby; the only Christian place I know of where you have to take your shoes off before entering. Hotels and guest houses abound in McLeodganj and I found a beautiful room with a balcony and mountain views - a luxury for the budget traveller.

A nice way to reach McLeodganj from Dharamshala centre is by the SkyWay, a cable car service, but it is also the most expensive option. It costs 450 INR one way (600 INR return) as compared to the 250-300 INR charged by taxi drivers. They seem to work as a monopoly with intimidating practices, as a tuktuk driver I agreed with on a better price was sent away by a taxi driver. I started walking but got lucky as an Indian visitor with a motorbike offered a free ride. Anyhow, the three options to reach McLeodganj from Dharamshala are cable car, taxi, and walking up a steep and long path.
