Khiva - A historic city within a fortress

The architecture and feel of Khiva is pretty similar to Bukhara, but here virtually all the attractions are concentrated within the walls of the fortress. Known as Itchan Kala, this is the old city, now more or less an open air museum. People still live here though and you can find a range of accommodation, including cheaper family-run hostels. Just like Samarkand and Bukhara, it is a tourist place, but just like those citites, it's a must. I had a relaxed, pleasant few days strolling the little alleys and visiting some of the attractions, including the talles minaret of Uzbekistan. Then, on the third day, an overnight train awaited that would take me back to Tashkent.
