Attractions in Termez and a peek into Afghanistan
Located on the border of Afghanistan, separated from it by the Amu Darya (Amu River), Termez is not on the main tourist route in Uzbekistan. It deserves to be, though, as the city and its surroundings offer some unique attractions. Among them are several archaeological sites from Hellenistic, Buddhist, Zoroastrian and Hindu eras, apart from the usual Islamic heritage. Furthermore, you can have a peek into Afghanistan.
The Archaeological Museum of Termez is definitely worth a visit, just as the Kara Tepe and Fayaz Tepe Buddhist sites, and in the otherwise quite pleasant city you'll find several other historic attractions. Among them are the Sultan Saodat Ensemble, Kirk Kiz (Kyrk Kyz) Fortress , and Al Hakim At-Termizi Mausoleum. From the latter, you can see the fenced border, the Amu river, and the desert landscape on the other side in Afghanistan.
