Osh - A pleasant city at the Uzbek border of Kyrgyzstan
Osh, the second largest city of Kyrgyzstan, doesn't have too many attractions, but it is a pleasant, laid-back place. Its most famous landmark is Sulamain Too (Sulayman Mountain), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, "the most complete example of a sacred mountain anywhere in Central Asia, worshipped over several millennia". One of the caves had been turned into a brutalist museum during Soviet times, and at the base of the hill a new mosque was constructed recently. In clear weather, you have a good view of the surrounding snow-covered mountains from the top, including the Pamir ranges. Apart from Sulamain Too, you'll find the largest Lenin statue of Central Asia in Osh, now undergoing renovations. Other monuments include one for the victims of Chernobyl, and the memorial for the Kyrgyz soldiers who died in the USSR's war in Afghanistan. The Jayma Bazaar along the river is interesting, but not that different from any other big market in the region.
