Bishkek - The first impressions of Kyrgyzstan
While in some parts of Georgia and Armenia you are reminded of Soviet times, in Kyrgyzstan it seems they're still living in it. Coming from Almaty, as soon as you enter the country, you find yourself in Lenin village (Leninskoye). Then in Bishkek you can see several Lenin monuments, and public places and institutions are named after the Russian revolutionary. Marx and Engels also have a statue, standing opposite a Soviet-era government building. There are plenty of other communist monuments, complete with red stars and/or hammer and sickle symbols. Most of the buildings are from Soviet times too; the grandoise government buildings, the brutalist cultural institutions as well as the living quarters. The change of guards at the nation's flag on Ala-Too Square is also done in the old Soviet way, and their uniform hasn't changed much either. Otherwise Bishkek is a pleasant place, with a quite laid-back atmosphere.
