Vardzia - Cave monastery near Akhaltsikhe
It's hard to tell which of the three Christian cave complexes I liked the most, they are all unique and different. Vardzia is similar to Uplistsikhe in a sense that it is a cave settlemet, a cave village, not only a monastery and some hermit caves, as is the case with the David Gareja (Davit Gareji) cave monastery. But unlike Uplistsikhe, which is over a hilltop, here the whole settlement is carved into a long, almost vertical cliff face. It is truly impressive! If you want to explore all the ways of this vertical maze, visit all (well, rather most) of the caves, you need 2-3 hours. You can reach the site with a marshrutka from Akhaltsikhe in about an hour. The site is also reminiscent of Cappadocia in Turkey.
