Lake Sevan - A stunning location in Armenia's highlands
Located about 2000 metres above sea level, Lake Sevan is some 50 minutes from Yerevan by marshrutka, less by car. No surprise it is a very popular getaway destination, especially in summer when Yerevan gets boiling hot. Touristy as it can get, nevertheless it's a very beautiful lake with stunningly blue water. The beaches are not sandy, though, but that doesn't keep hordes of people from relaxing by the water. Sevan town itself has a very Soviet feel and there is not much to see or do in it. However, the nearby peninsula has a couple of historic churches perched atop a hill, from where you can have a magnificent view of the lake, and on the hillside you'll find the "Rest House of Writers", a Soviet-era brutalist retreat that still functions as originally intended.
