Batumi, Georgia - An eclectic Black Sea resort
Batumi is a Black Sea resort city, but, luckily, it's much more than that. The beaches are actually not that good, as they are covered with gravel. The sandy beaches are a little further to the west along the coast: they are known for their black sand which supposedly has medicinal values. But forget the beach: Batumi has much more to offer! The setting is beautiful, as apart from the sea-front, there are many hills, and the architecture is an eclectic mix of old traditional Georgian, Soviet-era, and ultra-modern styles. The city also has a relatively strong Muslim influence in this prediminantly Christian country.
Batumi is a big and very busy city, but the central areas can be covered on foot in a couple of days. The long seafront promenade is pleasant, but the little and main streets, the different types of buildings, the street art give Batumi its charming and unique character.
