Teotihuacán - The world's grandest city of its time
At its peak, Teotihuacán was the largest city in the Americas and one of the largest in the world. You can still feel its grandeur walking its main street, the Avenue of the Dead, and marvelling at the colossal architecture. You can`t climb any of the pyramids anymore, which would be great, but it is understandable. The site, nevertheless, is stunning. Teotihuacán is located near Mexico City and it is very easy to make a day-trip to it by public bus - a little information about it can be found next. You could also stay in the pretty town of San Juan Teotihuacán for the night - there are a few photos of its centre at the end of the post.
Getting to Teotihuacán by public bus
In Mexico City, you can get to the Northern Bus Terminal (Terminal Central de Autobuses del Norte) by metro easily, and there you can buy a ticket in the number 8 section. Buses run about every 15 minutes from as early as 6 AM. You can buy a return ticket but it is not cheaper, so might as well buy it from the driver on the way back. The bus drops you off at one of the entrances (Gate 2) and you could get a ride back from the same spot, but if you want to visit San Juan Teotihuacán, you can get on the bus there as well. The archaeological site opens at 8 AM (not 9 AM), and if you get there early you will have a little quiet experience before the crowds start to arrive. On the way to Teotihuacán and back, the bus will pass some of those poorer areas that visitors otherwise don`t get to see. If you have enough time, on the way back you could get off a little before the terminal and visit the Basílica de Guadalupe complex (tell driver).
