Christianity and traditional beliefs in Chiapas

The Spanish have done a good job converting the indigenous population of Latin America, but many of the locals` ancient traditions survived and merged with Christian beliefs and practices. In Chiapas, this synchronicity is very evident. One good place to vitness it is the small town of San Juan Chamula, famous for its church where locals offer sacrifices of chicken, spirits, Coca Cola, tobacco etc, and perform different rituals. Photography is strictly prohibited inside, but next you can find a few pictures from the square in front of the church. Further down, you can see photos of a religious procession in San Cristóbal.

For information on how to get to Chamula see the post about San Cristóbal de las Casas.
