The Sarcophagi of Karajía (Carajía)

The sarcophagi found at Karajía are unique to the Chachapoya culture. They put the mummified bodies of their dead in human-like sarcophagi which were placed in difficult to get to locations. The sarcophagi stand up to 2.5 meters tall, constructed of clay, sticks and grasses, and feature exaggerated jawlines. Local residents refer to them as the “ancient wise men”. It is an attractions near Chachapoyas which is not that easy to visit independently, so taking a tour is a convenient option. The tour I took included a stop at a cave and lunch as well.
