The Pyramids of Lima, Peru
It is not very well known, but several pyramids are found in Lima. The site near Miraflores is the only place tourists seem to visit, but there are two more sites. And all three are quite different, so it is very worth to visit them all.
Map of the pyramid sites in Lima
1. Huaca Pucllana; 2. Huaca Huallamarca; 3. Mateo Salado.
Huaca Pucllana
This is the site that most tourists visit, but as far as I am concerned, this is not the most impressive one.
Huaca Huallamarca
This site consists of a single little pyramid - not very grandiose but nicely restored. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get in as it is closed on Sundays and Mondays, and that's exactly when I had free time. Anyway, at least I could have a look from outside.
Mateo Salado
Named after the 16th century French martyr Mateo Salado, as historians were not able to figure out its real name, this is the least visited but most extensive site. It is also the least restored as only a few years ago squatters lived here, but most of them have now been moved. The site consists of several pyramids, and unlike the other two places, the pyramids here were not constructed of adobe bricks but of rammed earth.
