Siem Reap - The Tourist Capital of Southeast Asia

Siem Reap is arguably the most touristy place in South East Asia. There are other cities that get more visitors, but those visitors are concentrated in a few areas and otherwise absorbed by the city. But Siem Reap is quite small, and the whole centre is like Bangkok's Khao San Road. There are bars, cafés, restaurants, tour agencies, markets, street vendors and all other tourist establishments, and nothing else. According to a local, 80% of the locals are involved in tourism in one way or another. Siem Reap, at least in this form, exists because of Angkor Wat - otherwise it would be a little, dull town as those unknown places that one drives through in Cambodia. Tourism is promoted by the government, and indeed it provides jobs for many and brought riches to some, but many still struggle and there is also utter poverty.
